Love Alone is Power: Christ's Last Instructions
A Breton-inspired folk spiritual reflecting on the Gospel of John through the voices of Master, Servant, Friend, and gathered community — tracing miracles, mercy, and the quiet revelation that God is Love.
[All Voices, low and steady]
Love alone is power,
not strength, nor might.
Love alone is power,
walking in the light.
[Master’s Voice, low and intimate]
I will not be here to guide your way,
so I speak now to you as friends, not servants.
The Master’s heart revealed, His purpose clear,
no longer bound to silence and to fear.
[Master’s Voice, slower, reflective]
This is the truth, the vow that you must keep:
that love alone is power—not strength, nor might.
And in love’s light, God’s glory wakes from sleep.
[All Voices, soft and communal]
Love alone is power,
walking in the light.
[Master’s Voice, softening]
I led you here to love, to cast out fear.
You came to faith—
it matters little how.
It’s love, in every form, that you must hear.
[Servant’s Voice, steady folk storytelling]
At Cana,
water turned to wine so bright,
and awe spread quick as guests saw heaven’s hand,
a miracle to fill their hearts with light.
[Friend’s Voice, quieter, contemplative]
Yet friends—
they saw the wine passed hand to hand,
thinned by water,
yet no guest turned away.
And still the room grew warm.
[Servant’s Voice]
Beside the well, He spoke and broke the shame
of one cast out—a woman met by chance—
and whispered to her words that bore His name.
[Friend’s Voice, reflective]
But friends saw love
cross every line—
through exile,
fear,
and disgrace.
[All Voices, soft]
Love alone is power,
walking in the light.
[Servant’s Voice]
He healed a distant boy with words of grace,
and servants marveled—power to cure the ill!
They believed He could reach through time and space.
[Friend’s Voice, softer]
But friends—
they felt a mercy reaching farther still,
a quiet hope
that reached beyond their fear.
[Servant’s Voice]
Beside the pool, He raised a man who’d lain
forgotten,
strength returned to weary limbs.
They said he was healed from all his pain.
[Friend’s Voice, gentle and searching]
But friends saw hope—
the urge to stand,
to rise again.
Like water drawn from wells,
love moved through weary limbs.
[All Voices, warm and gathering]
Round and round the circle,
walking in the light.
[Servant’s Voice]
Five loaves. Two fish.
And all could eat their fill.
A feast spread wide by His commanding hand,
a banquet born of something more than skill.
[Friend’s Voice, warm and communal]
But friends—
they watched the bread grow small
from hand to hand,
yet still the circle widened.
And none were left outside.
[All Voices]
None were left outside.
[Servant’s Voice]
They said He walked the waves,
hand raised high instead.
The storm obeyed,
the sea itself in thrall
to what He said.
[Friend’s Voice, almost whispered]
But friends…
they knew the storm was theirs instead:
the waves of fear
and doubt within themselves.
With just His breath,
a calm,
a stillness,
filled their hearts.
[All Voices, hushed]
Peace be still.
Love will quiet fearful hearts.
[Servant’s Voice]
They brought her, bound—
her guilt a sharpened dart.
And justice cried:
“Stone her!
Stone her now!”
But He—
He offered mercy’s second start.
[Friend’s Voice, plain and direct]
No metaphor.
No veil.
No careful hem.
But love itself—
a courage without fright.
The lifted hand.
The grace
that sheltered them.
[All Voices, soft]
Love alone is power,
walking in the light.
[Servant’s Voice]
He healed a man who lived in shadowed night.
They thought him wholly blind,
but now could see,
and praised the strength that gave the gift of sight.
[Friend’s Voice, tender]
But friends—
they saw love set free
a man who knew the light
as smallest sparks,
and trusted love
to make hope enough.
[Servant’s Voice]
They saw him rise
as if from death’s deep mark.
And servants marveled—
grave defeated, gone.
The dead brought back,
new life against the dark.
[Friend’s Voice, hushed]
But friends knew
something deeper left the tomb—
the love that death could not make dark.
[All Voices, rising softly]
You came to faith—
it matters little how.
Love alone is power,
walking in the light.
[All Voices, rising together]
And so, with eyes unbound and hearts renewed,
they saw each act reveal His boundless name:
a truth of love,
alive in wonder’s light.
[Master’s Voice, returning]
I am the Vine,
the Bread that feeds the crowd,
the life poured out
in loaves
and flowing wine,
a gift that fills
when love is shared aloud.
[Master’s Voice, intimate]
I am the Shepherd,
the one the lost still see,
who lifts the weak,
who calls the ones who come,
a guide for all who seek My company.
[Master’s Voice, calm and resolute]
I am the Way
through storm
and deepest night,
the Gate where all pass freely,
bound and whole,
the Light
that shows
the path—
your dawn,
your sight.
[All Voices, rising softly]
Because God is love.
And love is God.
[Master’s Voice, final breath, nearly spoken]
I am the Love—
by Me passes the Way
for you.
